"Lumbu is special because we believe in our own people's ability to create a better future." - Ms Patricia Turner, AM, Chairperson
The Lumbu Indigenous Community Foundation is Australia's first Indigenous controlled, national philanthropic foundation. The Foundation is pioneering an innovative model of community development to create sustainable positive change in Indigenous Australia.
Lumbu's model blends private and public, community and corporate sector values and experience, philanthropic support and Indigenous leadership to build effective community practices.
Lumbu Indigenous Community Foundation values Indigenous ideas, knowledge, and expertise as the foundation of sustainable, positive, community action.
Lumbu provides technical assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who are seeking to grow their community based initiatives. Commercial and community enterprise which has a broad social benefit to Indigenous people operates in Indigenous communities in Australia.
Lumbu is not a grantmaking foundation at this time.
Lumbu provides support by:
- skills transfer of action research, philanthropic and entrepreneurial techniques to improve project development and organisational stability;
- a focus on time, experience and expertise invested as inkind resources
- a commitment to build the Indigenous-led venture to a sustainable target, collaboratively;
- a non-adversarial facilitation approach
Lumbu: from the Yanyuwa language, Gulf of Carpentaria, Northern Australia:
"To stand up strong and healthy, as an individual or clan"
The Foundation's logo was designed by Aboriginal artist John Moriarty and symbolizes unity and strength.
